WHY I WROTE THIS BOOK

African-Americans make up approximately 13% of the population, but only 5% of the physician in the U.S. are African-Americans. Similarly, African-Americans and Latino-Americans make up less than 15% of all nurses. These statistics reveals how there is lack of representation in healthcare to take care of diverse communities.

I wrote this book to raise an awareness of the need to grow the pool of underrepresented students who can change these statistics. When students of color don’t see themselves represented in the world around them, it’s easy for those who want to go into a healthcare profession to get derailed. My mantra is built around the knowledge that people’s hopes and dreams are always based on what they can see. Helping these students pursue their dream career also boosts the communities they ultimately go back and serve.

MANY TALK ABOUT THE U.S. HAVING A GREAT HEALTHCARE SYSTEM BUT

COULD THE AVAILABILTY OF MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS BE IN JEOPARDY?

Your Image

The number of public health professionals equipped to serve the increasing needs of our nation is diminishing rapidly. This is an even more alarming truth for students of color seeking professions in healthcare as economic, environmental, and societal disparities deepen.

How can future healthcare systems be successful without a diverse pool of doctors, nurses, and other professional medical staff? What does the future of healthcare service delivery really look like?

Flatlining: Reviving the Heartbeat of Diversity in Medicine provides both a call to action and a detailed roadmap for healthcare delivery systems to follow in the future. It can be used as a tool for institutions that desire to be change agents through preparing the next generation of medical service providers.
